Central Texas spends more of the year outside than most of the country, and the back yard has become another room. That room needs power: a circuit for the outdoor refrigerator and another for the grill's rotisserie and lights, outlets along the island, fans and lights in the covered patio, landscape lighting, a heater for the three cold months, and a TV.

Outdoor wiring has its own rules for weather-rated boxes, GFCI protection, burial depth and the distances from a pool if there is one. JTX designs and installs the whole system with your builder or directly with you, and everything is done under permit and inspected.

Outdoor electrical services

  • Outdoor kitchen circuits. Dedicated circuits for the refrigerator, ice maker, grill accessories, disposal and small appliances, with weather-rated GFCI outlets along the island.
  • Covered patio fans and lighting. Outdoor-rated ceiling fans, recessed lights, string-light circuits and the switches and dimmers to run them from inside and out.
  • Pergola and gazebo power. Underground feeds to detached structures for lighting, fans, outlets and TVs.
  • Landscape and path lighting. Low-voltage landscape systems on transformers and timers, plus line-voltage flood and accent lighting.
  • Outdoor heaters, hot tubs and TVs. Circuits for electric patio heaters, spa disconnects and weather-rated TV outlets.
  • Subpanels for the back yard. When the outdoor space adds enough load, a subpanel near the patio keeps the main panel free and the runs short.

Why Leander back yards are wired by JTX

  • Outdoor rules, followed. Weather-rated boxes and covers, GFCI protection, proper burial, and pool clearances where they apply.
  • Licensed and insured. Outdoor circuits are permitted electrical work done by licensed electricians under TECL #37015.
  • We coordinate with your builder. Patio covers, outdoor kitchens and pools bring in several trades. We show up when the framing and the pad are ready and stay out of everyone's way.
  • Room for what you add later. We run enough capacity for the heater and the hot tub you have not bought yet.

Outdoor electrical questions

How many circuits does an outdoor kitchen need?

It depends on the appliances. A refrigerator typically wants its own circuit, and grill accessories, lighting and general outlets are spread across others so nothing trips while you are cooking. We plan it from your appliance list.

Do outdoor outlets have to be GFCI protected?

Yes. Outdoor receptacles are GFCI protected and installed in weather-rated boxes with in-use covers. We install them that way and test them before we leave.

Can you run power to a detached pergola or shed?

Yes. We trench and run an underground feed to the structure, with a subpanel there if the load calls for it.

Can you add outdoor electrical to a house that already has a patio?

Yes. Existing patios and yards are a large share of what we do. Access is a little harder after the fact and we tell you where we will need to open something.
